Garmin GPSMap 62s

Garmin GPSMap 62s

This is my favorite Garmin trail GPS receiver at present. I use it for trail mapping as I work on my hiking guides. If you need custom mapping and other advanced features and don't like touch screens this is your receiver. It comes preloaded with a worldwide base map, and detailed topo maps can be added, including Garmin 1:24000 topos and satellite imagery, as well as free maps.

The unit has a high sensitivity receiver, bright color screen, a 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, a barometric altimeter, advanced track navigation, and profiles. It runs about 20 hours on two AA-size batteries. The receiver is waterproof and has a high-speed USB port, and accept up to 32gb micro-SD cards for storage of maps, tracks, and waypoints. The unit is operated with rubberized buttons which can be used in cold weather with gloves. You can add free maps as well as Garmin maps and aerial imagery. The 62s features paperless geocaching. For hunters and anglers, there is sun and moon information as well as a hunt/fish calendar. Tide tables will be handy for boaters.

Another version, the GPSMap 62st, comes with Garmin 100K topo maps preloaded, but I don't recommend it because there are free sources of better-quality topo maps such as gpsfiledepot.com.
